How to Remember Names

Most names are forgotten because they were never really heard. Pay attention when you hear a name, say it back, link it to something about the person, and write it down within the hour with where you met. Look at your note before you see them again, and the name will stick.

The short answer

Hear it, use it, link it, write it down, review it. The first three happen in the conversation, the last two afterwards.

Seven techniques that work

  1. Decide to remember. Most of the time the name is lost because you were thinking about what to say next. Make the name the one thing you catch.
  2. Say it back. “Nice to meet you, Priya.” Saying it once out loud helps it stick.
  3. Ask about it. How it’s spelled or where it comes from. You hear it again and show interest.
  4. Link it to a picture. Connect the name with something you notice: Rosa with the red scarf, Ben who builds bikes.
  5. Use it once more when you say goodbye.
  6. Write it down within the hour, with where you met and one detail you talked about.
  7. Review it before you are likely to meet again: the next meeting, party or class.

If you already forgot

  • Be honest early: “I’m sorry, tell me your name again?” is easier on the second meeting than the tenth.
  • Introduce them to someone else and let them say their name.

The easier way with Starrise Contacts

Steps 6 and 7 are where an app helps most. Starrise Contacts saves the date, time and location when you create a new contact, so you know where you met, and lets you add a dated note with the details. See how to remember names and details.

  • Search your notes from Spotlight, for example “red scarf” or the name of a company.
  • Sort by last created to see everyone you met at an event.
  • With Pro, Voice Add lets you add a contact by saying their details.
