How to Add Notes to Contacts on iPhone

Open the contact in the Contacts app, tap Edit, scroll down to the Notes field, type your note and tap Done. Every contact has one Notes field for plain text. If you want several notes per person, each with a date, a contact notes app such as Starrise Contacts does that for free.

Updated October 2026

Add a note in the Contacts app

  1. Open the Contacts app, or open the Phone app and tap Contacts.
  2. Tap the person, then tap Edit.
  3. Scroll down to Notes and type what you want to remember.
  4. Tap Done. The note is saved with the contact and syncs with its account, for example iCloud.

Limits of the Notes field

  • There is only one field per contact, so new notes end up in one long block of text.
  • Notes have no date, so you can’t tell when you wrote what.
  • You can’t add reminders, to-dos or gift ideas to a note.

The easier way with Starrise Contacts

Starrise Contacts works on the contacts already on your iPhone and adds real notes to each of them. Learn more about the contact notes app.

  • As many notes as you like per person, each with its date and time, free.
  • Mention people by typing @ in a note, and the note is linked to their profile as well.
  • Search your notes from Spotlight on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
  • With Pro, Moments spot plans you mention in a note and remind you on the day, and an AI note summary sums up long notes.

Tips

  • Write the note right after you meet someone, while the details are fresh.
  • Note things you can ask about next time: a trip, a new job, a child’s name.
  • Keep private notes out of fields you share. A shared contact card can include its details.
