How Often Should You Text Your Friends?

There is no single right number, but a rhythm by closeness works well: close friends every week or two, good friends about once a month, and friends you see less often a few times a year. What matters more than frequency is consistency, and reaching out first without keeping score.

The short answer

Pick a rhythm per person, not one rule for everyone. Then make it easy to keep.

A simple rhythm by closeness

CircleWhoHow often
Inner circlePartner, best friends, closest familyEvery few days to weekly
Close friendsThe people you would call with big newsEvery 1 to 2 weeks
Good friendsFriends you enjoy but don’t see oftenAbout once a month
Wider circleOld classmates, former colleaguesA few times a year, and on birthdays

What to send when you have nothing to say

  • Follow up on something they told you: the trip, the new job, the dog.
  • Send a photo or link that reminded you of them.
  • Suggest a plan with a date, not just “we should meet”.

Signs your rhythm is off

  • You only hear from each other on birthdays.
  • Every conversation starts with catching up on months of news.
  • Replies feel like an obligation. Then less often may be better.

The easier way with Starrise Contacts

Keeping a rhythm is easy for three people and hard for thirty. Starrise counts from the last time you were in touch and reminds you when it’s time.

  • Dated notes tell you what you talked about last time.
  • Quick action buttons open WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal or Instagram with one tap.
  • Free birthday reminders cover the wider circle.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal not to text friends every day?

Yes. Most friendships do well with far less. What keeps a friendship alive is regular contact over time, not daily messages.

Should I always wait for them to text first?

No. Keeping score is a common reason friendships fade. If you value the friendship, reaching out first is a good sign, not a weak one.

How can I remember to text friends regularly?

Set a rhythm per person and let your phone remind you. Keep in Touch reminders in Starrise Contacts Pro do this and count from your last contact.
