How to Merge Duplicate Contacts on iPhone

When the Contacts app finds duplicates, it shows a Duplicates Found card below My Card. Tap View Duplicates, then Merge All, or open each pair and merge it. For duplicates the app doesn’t catch, open one contact, tap Edit, choose link contacts and pick the other card.

Merge the duplicates Contacts finds

  1. Open the Contacts app. If it has found duplicates, you’ll see Duplicates Found below My Card.
  2. Tap View Duplicates.
  3. Tap Merge All, or tap a name to check the pair and merge only that one.

Link two contacts by hand

  1. Open one of the two contacts and tap Edit.
  2. Scroll down and tap link contacts.
  3. Choose the other contact, tap Link, then Done. Both cards now show as one.

Why duplicates keep coming back

  • The same people are saved in two accounts, for example iCloud and Google. Tap Lists to see which accounts are on.
  • Linked contacts stay separate cards in their accounts. They only show as one on your iPhone.
  • Before merging many contacts, export a backup. See how to export contacts.

The easier way with Starrise Contacts

Starrise Contacts works on the same address book, so merged contacts show up merged there as well. It helps you keep one clean card per person instead of extra cards for old details:

  • Archive and favorite: archive old phone numbers or emails and mark the main one, so you always use the right detail.
  • Dated notes on each person, so changes like a new job are recorded instead of a new card.
  • More on the Apple Contacts alternative.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can iPhone merge duplicate contacts automatically?

Yes, partly. When the Contacts app finds duplicates, it offers to merge them all at once from the Duplicates Found card below My Card.

Why don’t I see Duplicates Found?

The card only appears when the app finds likely duplicates. For others, link the two contacts by hand: open one, tap Edit, then link contacts.

Can I undo a merge?

Linked contacts can be unlinked from the contact’s edit screen. For bigger mistakes, iCloud contacts can be restored from an earlier version on iCloud.com under Data Recovery.
