How to Tag Contacts on iPhone

The Contacts app on iPhone has no tags. The closest built-in option is Lists: create one list per tag and add people to as many lists as you like. For real tags on the contacts you already have, a contacts app such as Starrise Contacts adds tags and lists for free.

The short answer

Use Lists in the Contacts app as tags, or use a contacts app with real tags. Both work on the same address book.

The built-in workaround: Lists as tags

  1. Open the Contacts app and tap Lists at the top left.
  2. Tap Add List and name it like a tag, for example Gym, Book club or Clients.
  3. Touch and hold a contact, tap Add to List and choose the list. Repeat for every tag that fits.

Limits

  • You can’t see a contact’s tags on their card, only by opening each list.
  • Many small lists quickly make the Lists screen crowded.
  • Some accounts don’t support lists on iPhone.

The easier way with Starrise Contacts

Starrise Contacts adds tags and lists to the contacts already on your iPhone, without moving them anywhere. More on how to organize and tag contacts.

  • Tags and lists for any contact, free.
  • Dated notes next to the tags, so you know why someone is tagged.
  • Works with iCloud, Google and Exchange contacts on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Tips

  • Tag by how you know someone (work, school, neighbors) and by what you share (running, music).
  • Start with five to ten tags and add more only when you miss one.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the iPhone Contacts app have tags?

No. The closest built-in option is Lists. A contact can be in several lists, so you can use one list per tag.

What is the difference between a tag and a list?

A list is a group you open to see its members. A tag is a label you also see on the person. In practice, both let you find everyone with something in common.

Will tags change my contacts in iCloud or Google?

Lists you create in the Contacts app are saved in that account. Starrise Contacts works on your existing contacts without moving them, and with Pro its notes and extras sync through your own iCloud account.
